Weight Management and Cannabinoids
Ghrelin is a hormone released by the stomach to trigger the brain into looking for food. In short, it’s what makes us feel hungry, and it is currently thought to be the only circulating hormone that can do so.
Medical cannabis treatments for cachexia work in two ways. Exposure to certain cannabinoids in the medical marijuana plant cause a surge in ghrelin, but they also alter the chemistry in the hypothalamus, the gland in the brain that senses ghrelin, making us more susceptible to it and thus, hungrier!
Blood sugar has a direct effect on how we experience hunger and the dietary choices we make. Managing blood sugar effectively to avoid highs or lows between meals is a key component in weight loss.
CBD is not the only chemical compound in marijuana thought to support weight loss goals. Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) may play a role in regulating blood sugar. Like CBD, it is also thought to have appetite suppressing effects, provided it is used responsibly and under the guidance of an authorised prescriber.
